# Languages ClipCat transcribes

ClipCat hears speech in 100 languages, on your computer, with nothing uploaded. Which engine hears yours depends on the language and on your computer.

## Which engine hears your speech

- **Parakeet** (NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3) runs on the Neural Engine of Apple Silicon Macs. It hears the 25 European languages below, tells by itself which one you speak, and is the fastest.
- **Whisper** (whisper.cpp, with the Large v3 Turbo model unless you pick Base) runs on every Mac and Windows PC. It hears every language on this page, and on Apple Silicon it takes any language Parakeet doesn't know.
- Intel Macs and Windows PCs always use whisper. It's slower there, since it runs on the processor.

## Whisper: 100 languages on every computer

Whisper is most accurate in the languages it heard most in training, such as English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese. It makes more mistakes in languages with little recorded speech online. You can fix any word in the transcript.

## Choose the language

- Set the language for new projects in **Settings**, under Transcription. It starts as English.
- Choose **Detect automatically** to have whisper guess the language from the first seconds of speech. That skips Parakeet, so it takes longer on Apple Silicon.
- To change one project's language, open its transcript, pick the language under **Language** and choose **Transcribe again**.
- Settings also picks the whisper model (Large v3 Turbo, or the faster and less accurate Base), can turn Parakeet off, and downloads a model ahead of time or deletes one to free the space. A model only takes memory while it transcribes.
